“For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Matthew 12:34)
Friend, what is your heart full of?
Is it joy or anger? Contentment or desire? Bitterness or forgiveness?
I’ve been through a long season of learning these things and how to cleanse my heart from all things that do not please the Lord. It is so easy to allow anger to fill our hearts. Sometimes I think we may not even realize anger has filled our hearts until the Lord confronts us with it. But y’all, life is so much harder when we are angry. It’s stressful. It’s bitter. And joy is rare.
Take a minute and think about what really makes you angry.
Got it? Now invite the Lord into that dirty spot that we hide from so many. Or maybe that spot we don’t hide. Invite Him in.
By allowing the Lord into that spot, you will find motivation to change your ways. You will figure out how to shake things off. You will understand how to separate yourself from what brings the ugly out. You will learn how to grow in that area & see the Lord do what only He can do.
Lysa TerKeurst has a devotional she wrote and in one of them she talks about critics and says “It holds the root cause of their skepticism and the anger that probably has very little to do with me.” Right here she’s talking about people who criticize other people. However, if you flip that around and think, does any part of yourself fit this sentence? What is the root cause of your skepticism of others? What is the root cause of your anger? And how are those two qualities effecting not only yourself but others around you?
Do you see reason to start trying to work on these things yet? I think that to some degree everyone struggles with forgiveness, anger, bitterness, skepticism, and other stuff, but what matters is how we allow our struggles to exist in our life.
Do we fight them with all that we have or do we allow them to overcome and consume us?
Anger, bitterness, desires for more and more, will never ever allow you to live a fulfilling life. Toss these things away. Allow the Lord to come in and soften your heart.
You may think “but it’s just not right!! This person did this and that and you just don’t understand Hannah.” Friend, I may not understand the exact situation you are in, and I do understand that. However, can I tell you I know how miserable it is to be so filled with anger? I know how tiring it is to remain bitter because of situations I cannot change or even ones that I can. I know how desire can lead to never being content in life.
So, I encourage you to spend time with the Lord, however you connect with Him best. Invite him into all of your ugly spots and allow him to chisel them away. Find someone who will hold you accountable for going to the Lord and allowing Him to work on you.
One of my favorite ways to connect with God ,to worship Him, and to communicate with Him is through music. There is something about calling on His name at the top of my lungs that is so gratifying. Prayer is also a powerful tool. Through prayer I have time to think, to tell the Lord about my day, my season of life, my concerns, my thanks, and whatever else. I can speak to Him just as I can my best friend. And then, His word. He speaks to us so many times through His living word. Matthew 12:34 is such a wonderful example of this.
So friends, I encourage you to free yourself from all bondage and allow the Lord into those spots in your heart that need to be cleaned. Let Him power wash them and work hard to keep them clean! We all slip up every once in a while, we are human. I know I do, but I also know that God forgives me and grants me grace too. He’s always there to catch me as I’m falling.
Verse to ponder and pray over- Luke 21:13-15 “It will lead to an opportunity for you to witness. Therefore make up your minds not to prepare your defense ahead of time, for I will give you such words and a wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.”
